Western

This program has had an ongoing relationship with the WNC Human

Dr. Coghill brings a wealth of international business experience to
the program. They worked
together to totally redesign the WCU Human Resources Masters Program,
making it more relevant and useful in today’s business environment.
Dr.
Coghill facilitated an exercise on SHRM’s 35 Competencies.

By surveying the group, Dr. Coghill identified the three
competencies most important to our chapter as:

Service
Corps of Retired Executives:
John Whiteside of SCORE introduced his agency to our members.
The mission of SCORE is to aid in the formation and growth of
small businesses. Since
1964 they have served over 4 million clients and presented over 5,000
workshops.
SCORE
is a nonprofit organization that is confidential and free to the client.
They help men and women, young and old.
Their volunteers have worked with many large organizations such
as EXXON, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon.
While
SCORE provides a wide variety of services, their number one request is
for assistance in building a business plan.
They also provide seminars on marketing, using the internet and
accounting. A new service,
called “Tiger Teams” helps organizations brainstorm solutions to
business problems.
SCORE’s
Asheville office is located in the Federal Building. As the demand for their services grows, increasing numbers of
volunteer counselors are needed. Mr.
Whiteside asks our members to keep SCORE in mind when experienced staff
members retire. This
volunteer activity is a good way to transition into retirement, and
allows retirees to continue making a valuable contribution to the
community.
