MEETING MINUTES - April 10, 2002

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held on
Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Best Western on Smokey Park Highway.  Should you have any questions, comments or corrections,
please contact Bridget Downey, PHR, our Chapter Secretary.

BUSINESS MEETING:

Meeting opened by President Terry Clark, SPHR.  Guests and new members were welcomed.

Announcements:
Frank Pomeroy announced the Preferred Vendor for the month of April, Larry Zapf, Director of the Beverly Hanks & Associates Relocation and Business Development Program.  Beverly Hanks has a complete relocation program which offers some features that may be of interest to anyone involved in the hiring process.  They can provide estimates on total moving costs, policy analysis, and ideas to save money on relocations and temporary housing.

Western Carolina University Human Resources Masters Program:  Dr. Jim Kirk and Dr. Carey Coghill of Western Carolina University gave a presentation on the WCU Human Resources Masters Program.  This program has had an ongoing relationship with the WNC Human Resources Association, one which has been mutually beneficial.

Dr Kirk is well known as a visionary in the field of E-Learning.  Dr. Coghill brings a wealth of international business experience to the program.  They worked together to totally redesign the WCU Human Resources Masters Program, making it more relevant and useful in today’s business environment.

Dr. Coghill facilitated an exercise on SHRM’s 35 Competencies.  These were used as the foundation for developing the new program.  By surveying the group, Dr. Coghill identified the three competencies most important to our chapter as:

v     Organizational Development

v     Career Development

v     Coaching – tied with – Cost-Benefit Analysis

A shift in the name of the program from Human Resources Development to Human Resources emphasizes its broader scope.  Drs. Kirk and Coghill used a systems approach to add a focus on HR accounting practices and cutting edge technologies.  The three study areas offered are:

  v     E-Learning
  v     Organization Performance
  v     Generalist

The 36 required semester hours may be earned on-site or on-line.  This is the first time the program has been offered entirely on-line.  Those who would like more information can contact:

Service Corps of Retired Executives:
John Whiteside of SCORE introduced his agency to our members.  The mission of SCORE is to aid in the formation and growth of small businesses.  Since 1964 they have served over 4 million clients and presented over 5,000 workshops.

SCORE is a nonprofit organization that is confidential and free to the client.  They help men and women, young and old.  Their volunteers have worked with many large organizations such as EXXON, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon.

While SCORE provides a wide variety of services, their number one request is for assistance in building a business plan.  They also provide seminars on marketing, using the internet and accounting.  A new service, called “Tiger Teams” helps organizations brainstorm solutions to business problems.

SCORE’s Asheville office is located in the Federal Building.  As the demand for their services grows, increasing numbers of volunteer counselors are needed.  Mr. Whiteside asks our members to keep SCORE in mind when experienced staff members retire.  This volunteer activity is a good way to transition into retirement, and allows retirees to continue making a valuable contribution to the community.

Announcements:
The newsletter will be going out soon.  Your news, ideas, and announcements are always welcome.  Please send any submissions to Lisa Claxton.

A Public Transportation Forum will be held on May 17 for businesses within 15 miles of Asheville.  Members will receive an e-mail notice on the event.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
