MEETING MINUTES – February 12th, 2003

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held on Wednesday, February 12, at the Renaissance Hotel in Asheville.  Should you have any questions, comments or corrections, please contact Bridget Downey, PHR, our Chapter Secretary.

Chapter Business:
The meeting was opened by President Lorraine Poe, SPHR.

All attendees given the opportunity to briefly introduce themselves.

Bettina Hall announced that Simula will be closing on March 31, 2003.  They have a number of valuable employees to relocate.  Members interested in hiring should contact Bettina.

Frank Pomeroy introduced the vendor for the month, Tim Montgomery from American Screen Designs, also known as "The Gadget Man".  He brought catalogs and samples of products available through his company, most under $10.  American Screen Designs is currently running a special sale on denim shirts that can be embroidered or screen printed.  The American Screen Designs website is at http://www.buyasd.com/, and you can contact Tim Montgomery at Tim@BuyASD.com.

 

Thanks to Lisa Claxton and Carol Rovello for completing the February Newsletter.

Laura Russell is busy completing the School to Work page on our web site.  It will include sections on student jobs, interns, insurance information for students under 18 years of age, and a list of the different certifications students can earn.

Holly Waltemyer announced that there is now a link to the student SHRM website on our main page.  Anyone interested in the student chapter or Western Carolina University can contact Holly.

Deborah Stewart reminded members that the deadline for the May 3, 2003 PHR and SPHR exams is February 21, 2003.

Renee Anderson is heading the 2003 Workshop Committee.  Members will soon be receiving a survey to help in planning the event.

Bettina Hall and the Program Committee met and generated lots of good ideas for programs for the remainder of 2003.

Terry Clark reminded members to be sure to make their reservations for the meetings on time, and to cancel early enough to avoid being assessed a meal charge.

Program Highlights: 

  Bettina Hall introduced Nancy Russell-Forsythe, PhD, of Leadership Bridge, Ltd.  Dr. Forsythe gave a presentation and answered questions on Executive Coaching.  She explained what coaching is and is not, and identified the qualities that good candidates for coaching should possess.  The role of Human Resources in the coaching process was explored, and the advantages of coaching versus losing a valuable member of an organization were discussed.  For more information on coaching, Leadership Bridge, Ltd. has a web site at http://www.lbltd.com.  Dr. Russell-Forsythe can be contacted at nrussell@lbltd.com.
