MINUTES – January 12, 2005

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held on Wed., January 12, 2005, at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville.  Should you have any questions, comments or corrections, please contact Bridget Downey PHR, our Chapter Secretary.

Chapter Business:

Carolyn Worthington opened the meeting.  She welcomed everyone and noted that we had a good crowd for the first meeting of the year.  Members and guests were invited to introduce themselves and make any announcements they had for the chapter.

The 2005 Officers were introduced.  The complete list of officers and leaders can be found on the WNCHRA web site at http://wnchra.info/officers.htm.  Carol announced that we are recruiting volunteers for the newsletter.   Please contact Lisa Claxton if interested.

Frank Pomeroy and Diane Bailey Brooks announced that they are accepting applications for scholarship.  Applicants will be accepted from current or prospective students who actively attend chapter meetings and are pursuing a graduate degree.  Applications should be submitted by February 4, 2005, and will be awarded at the February Meeting.  Contact Frank Pomeroy to apply or for additional information.

Frank next introduced our vendor for the month, Ron Watkins of Mountain Sky Consulting.  Ron presented bad news and good news for HR professionals.  The US Dept. of Labor has estimated that turnover costs a company a minimum of 1/3 of the employee’s annual salary.  The good news is that Mountain Sky can help.  They are an assessment consulting firm that can help reduce turnover by with an effective assessment and interpretation service.

Bad employees rob you of time, patience and sanity.  All employees bring joy – some when they arrive, and some when they leave.  Mountain Sky Consulting understands that recognizing, retaining, and developing great people is essential to a successful business.

Ron noted that the book based on the extensive Gallup survey, “First Break all the Rules” defined an outstanding manager as one who recognizes that people don’t change much, so you’d better pick good ones.  Exceptional managers are those who recognize talent, know what motivates employees, and provide the necessary training.  To reduce turnover, it is essential to build a productive and professional team.

The assessment tools used by Mountain Sky Consulting have never been challenged by the EEOC.  In closing, Ron reminded us that people don’t leave jobs – they leave supervisors.

Program Highlights:

Carol Rovello introduced our featured speaker, Laura Jones, LCSW of the Employee Assistance Network.  Laura’s timely presentation provided useful tips on making New Year’s resolutions and personal and professional goal-setting.  She reminded us it’s not too late.  You can set goals or make resolutions at any time.  Setting goals gives direction to life.

Laura pointed out that this is not new information, but information we can all benefit from being reminded of.  Good goals should be:

  • Attainable

  • Not in conflict

  • Realistic

Steps for positive results include putting goals in writing.  When writing goals, consider the feeling you would like to have once you have attained the goal.  That is an important step in recognizing the goal’s importance or lack thereof, and in connecting feelings to the goal.

The next step is to act as if you have achieved the goal.  Behave as if you were where you want to be.  Begin doing research and taking steps to achieve the goal.

Make daily lists to help nurture your goals.  Be sure to track your accomplishments.

Be careful about sharing your goals.  People who don’t share your enthusiasm may sap your energy and subtly sabotage your success.

Encouragement can be motivating.  Recognize people who are likely to give you encouragement and celebrate your successes.

Goal-setting is a powerful exercise.  Writing down plans makes them happen.  There are many resources available.  Oprah Winfrey is an example of the power of setting goals and following through.  The most important goal to remember is to put yourself on your to-do list.

The Employee Assistance Network can be contacted at 828-252-5725.

Announcements:

On the SHRM web site there is a report on the Top 10 Trends in the Coming Year.  This is the 2004 – 2005 Workplace Forecast.  The ideas presented could be good sources of ideas for future meeting topics.  Members with suggestions for programs are reminded to contact Carol Rovello.

Members are reminded of the February 1, 2005 workshop on Strategic HR Practices & Metrics.

Anyone having an educational opportunity, please feel free to bring it to the group’s attention.

Two job opportunities were announced, one for an HR Manager for a new manufacturing plant in Burnsville, and one for a Benefits Coordinator for RHA in Asheville.  Details on these and other employment opportunities can be found on the Job Postings page of our web site.  The RHA position is posted on Career builder.

Tony & Kristi presented some news from JobLink  They have a program that will pay up to half the cost of training for prospective employees in their program.  There will also be a job shadowing opportunity for students on March 16, 2005.  Contact Kristi Reed at JobLink for details.
