MINUTES – September 14, 2005 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville. Program: Patricia Digh, presented an extended workshop on Achieving Diversity Competency through Experiential Learning. Members can learn more about Patricia’s efforts to to understand and help others understand the human, business, and societal costs of discrimination and exclusion at her Real Work website. Announcements: Carolyn Worthington, our chapter president, expressed her hopes that many of us will be able to attend the State SHRM conference October 13-14 in Fayetteville. Contact Carolyn if you are interested in carpooling. Our chapter is one of two finalists for the 2007 State conference. Chapter Business: Kim Moser, our president-elect, requests that members contact her to express interest in positions, roles, or other contributions for 2006. Current needs include members and leaders for the program committee. Lorraine Poe announced that the SHRM certification study group has begun. They meet on Thursdays from 11:30am – 2:30 pm. Contact Lorraine if you are interested in joining them. Mike Neely, our VP of membership announced that we now have 152 members. Growth has been excellent this year, and he expressed his thanks to all of the members who have invited guests to join us. At each meeting, approximately 1/3 of the members attend. Carol Rovello, VP of programs, announced the schedule for the remainder of 2005: October: Dr. John Sherlock of Western Carolina University presenting the HR Manager as CEO (Chief Ethics Officer). November: Joseph F. Damore, CEO of Mission Hospitals discusses The Rising Cost of Healthcare. December: Installation of officers plus some fun activities to help us get to know each other better. The December meeting will be held at Elaine’s in the Grove Park Inn Resort. Joan Galvin of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNC-A placed flyers on the table and announced that they are presenting workshops on career, health & fitness, finance, and quality of life topics. HR practitioners interested in checking into these programs for their employees should contact Joan. September is National College Savings Month. Members and guests were invited to introduce themselves. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
