WorkKeys: An
Emerging System for Workforce Development & Business Efficiency
(Asheville, NC): The next
regular meeting of the Western North Carolina Human Resources
Association will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 8, at the
Renaissance Asheville Hotel in downtown Asheville.
The presenters for
this program are Phil Monk and Shelley White. Mr. Monk is the
Business Services Director for the Mountain Area Workforce Board. He
has over 20 years experience in employment and training services and
nearly 10 years of experience in business services with Western
Carolina University, Western Carolina Industries, Rural Internet
Access Authority, and the Mountain Area Workforce Board. Mr. Monk has
a MS in Sociology from Texas A&M University.
Ms. White is the
Coordinator for Human Resources Development Programs at
Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. She has been in this
position for 2 ˝ years. Ms. White has a MS in Human Resources from
Western Carolina University.
Mr. Monk and Ms.
White will discuss the business and economic development implications
of the WorkKeys System, and its emerging importance in the North
Carolina’s workforce development environment.
The WorkKeys System
is used for job skills profiling, assessment and skill building.
Virginia, South Carolina and Kentucky have adopted the WorkKeys System
as the preferred method of matching individuals’ skill levels with the
skill requirements of specific jobs. Borg-Warner, Kimberly-Clark and
Raflatac use the WorkKeys System as a major factor in their hiring and
advancement decisions. Soon North Carolina will be unveiling a Career
Readiness Certificate Program that will award Gold, Silver or Bronze
certificates based on an individuals’ WorkKeys assessment scores.
The program is open
to members, students and anyone interested in learning more about
human resource-and management-related issues. Reservations can be

The cost of attending the lunch meeting is $16.00 for members and
students, $20 for nonmembers, and includes lunch (a vegetarian option
is available by request when making reservations).
The Western North Carolina Human Resources
Association is a certified chapter of the Society for Human Resources
Management, and is comprised of human resource and other professionals
from various area businesses and industries. The purpose of the
association is to develop the personnel function in each participating
company by close contact and cooperation with others in the same
field, to facilitate the dissemination of information of value to
human resource professionals individually and collectively, and to
promote positive human relations principles.
