MINUTES – August 9th  2006

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville.  Should you have any questions or comments, please contact  Rachel Bemis, PHR, our 2006 Secretary.

Carol Rovello opened the meeting.  She announced that the September meeting on Diversity will be an extended program at the AB Tech Enka Campus.

Richard Hurley, formerly of Square D, encouraged attendees to donate to the United Way.

Frank Pomeroy introduced the vendor, Melissa Fallon, from RBC Centura’s Bank at Work Program.  Participants can have a representative come to their business and will receive financial counseling, savings/investments counseling, and free checking.

Charles Martinez spoke about early college and needs eight volunteers who can provide job shadowing for students.  He also placed a copy of the Chapter Achievement Plan at each table.

Theresa McCarthy introduced Rusty from the Employee Assistance Network, who presented on Workplace Violence.  He is a licensed counselor with 25 years of experience.  Myths about workplace violence include:

v     Employees just snap – “it’s not a microwave, it’s a crock pot.”

v     If you see clues, there should be no incidents.

v     Usually it’s a person who has lost everything.

The profile that is commonly used is a white male around age 30.  However, this is not a valid profile, especially given recent violent incidents.

Early warning signs include diminished work  performance and poor attitude, verbal threats, intimidation, or carrying a concealed weapon.

      Meeting Adjourned.
