MINUTES – February 8, 2006

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville.  Should you have any questions or comments, please contact  Rachel Bemis, PHR, our 2006 Secretary.

Opening

Kim Moser opened the meeting with announcements.  Two conferences are currently posted on the website: SHRM-Atlanta One Day Spring Fling Session on 3/21/2006 hosted by Institute of Technology – School of Management in Atlanta, Georgia and 2006 ILG Regional Conference May 16, 2006 at Friday Center in Chapel Hill.  The WNCHRA Board is to meet later this month for a planning meeting.  This Chapter is hosting the 2007 State SHRM conference.  There are many volunteer needs for the Conference.   Kim encouraged members to check the Chapter’s website and praised Donna Cator’s work on the website.

Vendor

Kim Moser introduced our February vendor, Annmarie Edwards, from Aria Research Group.  Aria Research Group established in 2005, is a woman-owned business specializing in building a global economy where individuals play an important role. Annmarie is a certified International Job & Career Development Coach from the Career Planning and Adult Development Network. She has an M.A. in Education from Adelphi University and a B.S. in Education from St. John’s University in New York City. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Phoenix.  She introduced several publications such as: 50 Tips To Energize Your Workforce, 50 Ways to Maximize Your Potential and 50 Proven Strategies to Maximize Your Job Search.  More information can be found at their website (www.ariarearchgroup.com) and on our 2006 Vendors webpage.

 Programs

Jon Yarborough gave a preview of the March program.  It will be on Workforce Development, featuring Work Keys from the State Career Readiness Program.

The speaker was Penni P. Bradshaw, a partner in the law firm of Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLC, who concentrates her legal practice in the areas of Immigration Law and Employment Law.  Ms. Bradshaw gave a brief history of immigration in the United States.  There are 5.5 million illegal aliens in the United States and this number is after implementing more border control after 9/11.  Homeland Security is the enforcement agency and the current focus is on criminal aliens and false identity documents.  North Carolina is the #1 state with the fastest growing (legal and illegal) Hispanic population.  Georgia is #2.

She gave the following reasons for why some people are in the United States illegally:  1) There are no work visas available.  2) Three and ten year bars are placed on legal immigration. 3) Some illegal aliens believe their paperwork is legal and do not know they are illegal.

She gave tips on the I-9 form and identified some items that need special attention, such as not using white-out on the I-9, being aware of document fraud and working to resolve issues surrounding social security number mismatch letters.  She also suggested photocopying documents for the I-9 verification.  There is not a requirement to photocopy documents.  A bill has passed the House of Representatives requiring online verification of work verification.  Although not required, online verification is available for “new hires only” at https://vis-dhs.com/employerregistration.

A copy of Ms. Bradshaw’s overheads was requested and will be forwarded to the membership by Jon Yarborough.

Final Announcements

Laura Misner announced a Financial Aid Workshop on Thursday, February 16, at East Henderson High School.

The Bank of Asheville is now offering Health Savings Accounts
