MINUTES – July 11th  2006

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Association held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville.  Should you have any questions or comments, please contact  Rachel Bemis, PHR, our 2006 Secretary.

Carol Rovello opened the meeting.  She announced the upcoming schedule which includes August – Workplace Violence, September – Diversity, and October – HR Horror Night.

Charles Martinez announced that the Workforce Readiness Committee seeks volunteers.

Frank Pomeroy announced the vendor as Doug Roth, President and CEO of United Services Credit Union.  They specialize in H.S.A.’s (Health Savings Accounts).  The money saved in an H.S.A. can be used to fund a retirement plan if not used for health care costs.

Kim Moser announced that the state conference in Durham is coming up.  If members are attending, please let the officers know in order to carpool.  Kim also announced that July 15th is the deadline for scholarships.

The speaker was Judge Hal, a US Magistrate Judge.  He shared his perspective on employment litigation.  His recommendations included;

v     All employers need a written non-discrimination policy.

v     When a complaint is received, it must be investigated promptly and thoroughly.

v     Age discrimination claims are on the rise, so be aware.

v     Most ADA claims are about a perceived disability rather than an actual one.

v     Many cases that make it to court involve claims of differential treatment.

v     More ERISA cases are making it to court as well.

Meg Turner and Marilyn McDonald from AB Tech spoke about early college.  Early college is a way to earn a HS Diploma and an Associates Degree simultaneously during a five year course of study.  There is a nationwide effort to redesign the American High School, in part due to the increased need for skilled labor.  In 1950, 80% of jobs were unskilled.  Currently, 80% of jobs require skilled labor.

      Meeting Adjourned.
