MINUTES – March 14, 2007

Minutes of  Monthly Meeting of the Association.   Should you have any questions or comments, please contact  Rachel Bemis, PHR, our 2006 Secretary.

Submitted by Rachel Bemis, Secretary

Carol Rovello started the meeting by welcoming attendees, who then individually introduced themselves to the group. Board members provided brief updates during this introduction period.

Mary Bryan, Chair of the Diversity Committee, introduced a focused networking activity, which asked attendees at each table to discuss the following diversity question: what does your organization do to value diversity? There was lively conversation and each group provided a brief summary of their discussion, facilitated by Marta Alcala-Williams.

The Vendor was Larry Casper with Edward Jones. Larry provided information regarding his services and the importance of 401 (k) plans.

Jon Yarbrough announced that the April half day program will be on NC employment law, including wage and hour issues. The meeting date will remain the same, April 11th, but the schedule will be different than usual. The meeting will start at 8:30 with breakfast and the program will run from 9:00 to noon. Three recertification credit hours will be awarded for participation. Lunch will not be provided.

Jon then introduced the speaker, Charles Rosenblum of Rosenblum Associates of who spoke on the topic, “HR and Senior Management: Why We Aren’t Taken Seriously.” Contemporary business press, in publications such as Fast Company and Fortune, have criticized Human Resources for being non-strategic. Chuck acknowledged that there is some basis for these criticisms and suggested strategies for HR professionals who wish to more fully participate in guiding the direction of their organizations. He answered the question “when and how will human resources break through the senior strategic ceiling and become full-fledged members of the executive suite?”  He showed how the perception of HR is altered dramatically when HR understands the businesses their organizations are in, demonstrates knowledge of business strategies, and can clearly articulate their organization’s mission.

After the presentation, the meeting was adjourned by Carol.
