HR as CEO – e.g., Chief Ethics Officer?

(Asheville, NC):  The next regular meeting of the Western North Carolina Human Resources Association will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 12, at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel in downtown Asheville.

Analyses of the ethical failures at Enron, WorldCom, etc., have prompted a number of questions pertaining to human resources.  One of the first is where was HR in these companies when all these abuses were going on?  Another, more macro question, is what role, ideally, should HR play when it comes to ethical leadership?  What are the practical limitations?  This presentation is intended to probe these questions and the implications for HR professionals in their evolving role both as strategic partners – and ethical leaders in their organizations.

Dr. John Sherlock is an Assistant Professor of Human Resources at Western Carolina University and Director of Western’s Master’s degree program in Human Resources.  He teaches a variety of graduate courses such as compensation and benefits; research and evaluations; leadership; and organizational development. He has also taught at George Washington University and the University of Maryland.  Prior to entering academia, Dr. Sherlock was employed in the wireless telecommunications industry for twenty years, overseeing functions such as human resources, strategy, marketing and finance.  He earned his doctorate in Human Resource Development from George Washington University, his MBA from the University of Maryland and his Bachelor’s Degree from James Madison University.

The program is open to members, students and anyone interested in learning more about human resource-and management-related issues.  Reservations can be made by emailing Mike Neely at mneely@ingles-markets.com, or by calling 669-2941, extension 310.  The cost of attending the lunch meeting is $16.00 for members and students, $20 for nonmembers, and includes lunch (a vegetarian option is available by request when making reservations).

The Western North Carolina Human Resources Association is a certified chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management, and is comprised of human resource and other professionals from various area businesses and industries.  The purpose of the association is to develop the personnel function in each participating company by close contact and cooperation with others in the same field, to facilitate the dissemination of information of value to human resource professionals individually and collectively, and to promote positive human relations principles.
