WNC Human Resources Association Announces a Special Program

Recruiting & Retaining Minorities in the Workplace

(Asheville, NC):  The next meeting of the Western North Carolina Human Resources Association will be an extended meeting featuring a special program.  It will be held at the Haynes Conference Center  (Large 2nd Floor Conference Room) at the Enka Campus of A-B Tech Community College.  Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Program will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Lunch will follow the program.

Lewis Isaac, Training Coordinator for the City of Asheville, and Edna Campos, Consultant and Community Advocate, will present on the benefits of diversity, as well as strategies for recruiting and retaining minority employees.  The presenters will use interactive methods and activities to heighten awareness of biases.  They will share ideas that will help us to become more culturally competent.

Lewis Isaac, a native of North Carolina, received his Bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University.  After retiring from the VA Medical Center in Asheville from his career in Human Resources, he accepted employment with the City of Asheville.  He also worked five years as the Equal Employment Program Manager and served as a national trainer for the programs “EEO is Effective Management”, “Preventing Sexual Harassment” and “Aids in the Workplace”.  Mr. Isaac is an active community volunteer serving on the Board of Directors for a variety of agencies, volunteering with Building Bridges of Asheville and as a volunteer mediator with The Mediation Center.

Edna Campos is a public relations and Political Consultant for Edna Campos and Associates.  Prior to relocating to North Carolina her consulting business was based in Houston, Texas.  She served as a consultant for numerous Latino community projects including the Board of Directors for Southwest Voter Registration and Education-Houston Project, and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials-Citizenship Empowerment Project among many others.  In North Carolina, she has served as the Asheville Local Coordinator for “Town Meeting for the Future of Media” and Campaign Director for “El Pueblo Votes”. Locally she is the Chair of the Asheville Latin Americans for Advancement Society, on the Board of Mission Hospital and the Community Health Enhancement Committee, and serves on the Steering Committee for the Coalition for Latino American Organizations.  She also previously served on the Asheville Buncombe United Way Board and at Western Carolina University on Chancellor Bartos’ Community Roundtable. Ms. Campos was the recipient of the 2004 Latina Leadership Award from the National Foundation for Women Legislators.

The program is open to members, students and anyone interested in learning more about human resource and management-related issues.  Reservations can be made by emailing Mike Neely at mneely@ingles-markets.com, or by calling 669-2941, extension 310.  The cost of attending the program is $25 for members and students, $30 for nonmembers, and includes lunch (a vegetarian option is available by request when making reservations).

The Western North Carolina Human Resources Association is a certified chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management, and is comprised of human resource and other professionals from various area businesses and industries.  The purpose of the association is to develop the personnel function in each participating company by close contact and cooperation with others in the same field, to facilitate the dissemination of information of value to human resource professionals individually and collectively, and to promote positive human relations principles.
