Recruiting & Retaining Minorities in the Workplace
(Asheville, NC): The next
meeting of the Western North Carolina Human Resources Association
will be an extended meeting featuring a special program. It will be
held at the Haynes Conference Center (Large 2nd Floor
Conference Room) at the Enka Campus of A-B Tech Community College.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Program will be from 9:00
a.m. to 12:15 p.m., on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Lunch will
follow the program.
Lewis Isaac, Training
Coordinator for the City of Asheville, and Edna Campos, Consultant and
Community Advocate, will present on the benefits of diversity, as well
as strategies for recruiting and retaining minority employees. The
presenters will use interactive methods and activities to heighten
awareness of biases. They will share ideas that will help us to
become more culturally competent.
Lewis Isaac, a native
of North Carolina, received his Bachelor’s degree from Johnson C.
Smith University. After retiring from the VA Medical Center in
Asheville from his career in Human Resources, he accepted employment
with the City of Asheville. He also worked five years as the Equal
Employment Program Manager and served as a national trainer for the
programs “EEO is Effective Management”, “Preventing Sexual Harassment”
and “Aids in the Workplace”. Mr. Isaac is an active community
volunteer serving on the Board of Directors for a variety of agencies,
volunteering with Building Bridges of Asheville and as a volunteer
mediator with The Mediation Center.
Edna Campos is a
public relations and Political Consultant for Edna Campos and
Associates. Prior to relocating to North Carolina her consulting
business was based in Houston, Texas. She served as a consultant for
numerous Latino community projects including the Board of Directors
for Southwest Voter Registration and Education-Houston Project, and
the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed
Officials-Citizenship Empowerment Project among many others. In North
Carolina, she has served as the Asheville Local Coordinator for “Town
Meeting for the Future of Media” and Campaign Director for “El Pueblo
Votes”. Locally she is the Chair of the Asheville Latin Americans for
Advancement Society, on the Board of Mission Hospital and the
Community Health Enhancement Committee, and serves on the Steering
Committee for the Coalition for Latino American Organizations. She
also previously served on the Asheville Buncombe United Way Board and
at Western Carolina University on Chancellor Bartos’ Community
Roundtable. Ms. Campos was the recipient of the 2004 Latina Leadership
Award from the National Foundation for Women Legislators.
The program is open
to members, students and anyone interested in learning more about
human resource and management-related issues. Reservations can be

The cost of attending the program is $25 for members and students, $30
for nonmembers, and includes lunch (a vegetarian option is available
by request when making reservations).
The
Western North Carolina Human Resources Association is a certified
chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management, and is
comprised of human resource and other professionals from various area
businesses and industries. The purpose of the association is to
develop the personnel function in each participating company by close
contact and cooperation with others in the same field, to facilitate
the dissemination of information of value to human resource
professionals individually and collectively, and to promote positive
human relations principles.
